Living well with Parkinson's may be difficult at times

I know how critical exercise is for my good health, but recently it was no longer part of my routine. It wasn't a conscious decision. It's just that due to a family emergency (my mother had a stroke), I just couldn't fit it in my exercise classes.

All of a sudden I was dealing with hospital visits, doctors, nurses, aides, physical therapists. I had to go through her house and her belongings—what to take and what to give away? Where was everything? And last but not least, responding to my mother's calls and the calls from her new care home. So many crises, so little time.

One by one the questions were answered, and the jobs done. My life is slowly getting back to normal, whatever normal is these days. And best of all, everyone welcomed me back to the support group and to my exercise classes.

I feel better. I have survived.

In this crisis, I learned to:

  • Talk about things.
  • Rest whenever possible.
  • Take one task at a time.
  • Rest whenever possible.
  • Accept that professional counseling may help.
  • Let some things go.
  • Re-start regular exercise as soon as possible.
